My friend’s dad is an amazing guy. He has a lot of money, a beautiful family, a nice home, and a good car. But his day always depends on his back. Some mornings he wakes up in so much pain that he can barely walk. That stayed with me for a long time. It motivated me to take better care of my body, especially my back. Because it does not matter how much money you make, or whether you fly first class or economy class. We all have only one health.

I have been exercising, stretching, and staying active for a long time. But to be honest, for a couple of years I sometimes felt small back pain. It was not terrible, but it was always there. For example, when I stayed on my feet for a long time, the pain would come back, and I did not understand why. I could not believe it, because I was swimming, going for massages regularly, and training my back almost every day. My back even became one of the strongest parts of my body. Still, the small pain sometimes drove me crazy.

I was really worried. I'm 30 now, but I kept asking myself what will happen when I'm 50? I would rather stay healthy in economy class than sit in pain in first class.

About a year ago, I moved to a different city and started working as a salesperson in a furniture store. We also had a mattress department. When I began reading more about mattresses, I felt overwhelmed. It looked like science to me. At the same time, I felt a little awkward. I was sleeping on a $120 mattress with five inches of foam. As I learned more, I started to understand the difference between pocket coil mattresses and foam mattresses. I thought, wow, this actually matters. I realized that I needed a quality mattress for myself.

The biggest secret about mattresses is simple. What works for you does not work for someone else. Everyone sleeps differently. People have different body weights, heights, and comfort preferences. That is when I started thinking that maybe my small back pain was coming from the low quality mattress I had been sleeping on my whole life. I spend at least seven hours in bed every day, so it started to make sense. It took me about one month from the moment I started researching to the moment I decided to buy one. I still wanted a reasonable price, but I also understood that you cannot really be cheap with something you sleep on every day for eight to ten years.

When they delivered the new mattress to my home, I had no expectations. But I clearly remember the first time I lay on it. It felt perfect. I was really happy because I knew this was a big change for me. I continued doing the same things as before. I went to the gym, swam, and sometimes went for a massage. After one month, the small back pains were gone. I'm not saying that you should stop exercising and just buy a quality mattress. These two things go together. Sleeping on a quality mattress is part of a healthy lifestyle, just like movement, stretching, and staying active.

The right mattress for better health.

How to Choose the Right Mattress for Better Sleep and Back Support

  1. Start with Comfort

Ask yourself what feels best for you:

  • Firm

  • Medium

  • Soft

Your comfort preference is the most important factor. A mattress that feels good when you lie on it is much more likely to help you sleep better.

  1. Think About Temperature While Sleeping

Do you sleep hot or cold? This can strongly influence which mattress works best for you.

  • Pocket coil mattresses usually sleep cooler because air can circulate through the coils.

  • Foam mattresses are generally warmer. However, high quality foam mattresses can also sleep cool. You just need to expect a higher price. A cooling mattress cover can also help a lot.

  1. Consider Back Support

Good back support helps keep your spine aligned while you sleep.

  • Side sleepers often prefer medium to soft mattresses.

  • Back sleepers usually prefer medium to firm mattresses.

  • Stomach sleepers often need firmer support.

  1. Set a Budget

Mattresses vary a lot in price, so decided what you're comfortable spending. Investing in quality sleep is worth it. But if you spend hours before sleep worrying about your credit card, that is not healthy either. Find a balance.

  1. Ask About Trial Periods

Many furniture stores offer trial periods, sometimes 60 days or more. This means you can try the mattress at home and exchange it if it does not work for you. Some stores conditions. For example, you may need to buy a mattress protector from the same store, or the trial may apply only to certain price ranges. Do not hesitate to ask about the store’s specific trial policy. It can make choosing a mattress much easier.

  1. Avoid Buying a Mattress Online

Try to avoid buing a mattress online. It can have thousands of good reviews, but that does not mean it is the right mattress for you. A mattress is one of the most personal purchases you will make. In most cases, it is also shared by two people. What feels comfortable for you must also feel comfortable for your partner. That is why it is always better to visit a furniture or mattress store, try different options, ask questions, and choose the right one together.
